Thanks to Jorge's comment, I have put a note about it back into the post.Mayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18230268418171628594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5666114716955489883.post-89570538852741695332010-03-19T21:52:03.688-04:002010-03-19T21:52:03.688-04:00It is always difficult to judge a person, especial...It is always difficult to judge a person, especially in such an ambiguous situation. Of course, I realize these people were close relatives, so their perceptions would be colored by that, but on the other hand, they were privileged witnesses of events, and I think their view does have to be given due weight. Obviously, I did not intend this post to provide a definitive "answer" to the question of L-P's character and motives. I was just struck by the fact that I had always interpreted his actions negatively, yet it is possible he had better intentions than it might seem.Mayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18230268418171628594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5666114716955489883.post-65753379082517916802010-03-19T20:46:56.826-04:002010-03-19T20:46:56.826-04:00Thank you for the account, Matterhorn. However, they were his relatives, and thus they would also see him in a more idealized, subjective way. I would prefer to see accounts about Louis-Philippe from people who worked with him and did not enjoy the intimacy that a family gives. This said, I've always had the feeling that he was a good family man, but this doesn't mean that he didn't harboured political ambitions. As all men and women, he had his lights and shadows.Jorgenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5666114716955489883.post-84518870643983377262010-03-19T18:43:34.702-04:002010-03-19T18:43:34.702-04:00Things are quite often not so simple as they seem ...Things are quite often not so simple as they seem on the surface; there are invariably circumstances behind events that make things more complicated. One cannot change the facts of who is legitimate and who is not in terms of authority, yet, Louis-Philippe may well have been trying to make the best of a bad situation rather than being purposely ambitious and malicious in his actions. And, of course, it is always easier to see the bad in others rather than the good in them.MadMonarchisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08083008336883267870noreply@blogger.com
